1972 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona

This particular Ferrari Daytona was a standard North American Export Model ordered new by Fredrick Gary Gleseke of 1930 NE., 47th, Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The order was placed via Luigi Chinetti Motors and specified European delivery with “EE” Temporary tourist registration and follow-on shipping to New York at a later unspecified date.

Upon acceptance of the order and an initial agreement to pay $16,730 US dollars for the vehicle, assembly commenced and was officially recorded by Ferrari on November 22nd, 1971 after a 10 percent ($1,600 US dollar) deposit was received. This Ferrari was sequentially the 621st of 1,284 officially recorded completed examples. The Ferrari/Scaglietti Body/Job number assigned to this vehicle was 649/B putting it almost exactly in the middle of Daytona production. The original engine number was “B1406” and the original transaxle number was 654, both of which remain with the vehicle today (matching numbers.)

The original order specified the following options:

-Air Conditioning

-Blaupunkt “Koln” Stereo Radio, Speakers and Antenna

-Borrani Wire Wheels with Knock Off Hubs

-European Temporary “EE” Tourist Plates

-Front and Rear Body Protection

Three days after completion, on November 25th, 1971, Mr. Gleseke completed a revised balance of payment totaling $15,160 UD dollars. Mr. Gleseke deferred collection of his new Ferrari from the Factory until the end of May, early June of 1972. Gleseke’s friend and Ferrari agent in the States, Luigi Chinetti from whom he had initially ordered this vehicle had arranged for an official paddock parking pass and admission to watch the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans. Mr. Gleseke drove his new Ferrari to the Sarthe Circuit and was able to watch and cheer on the official NART Competition Daytona being driven by Sam Posey and Tony Adamowicz to a very credible 6th overall and 2nd in class finish. (Today the remains of the original Le Mans parking pass can still be seen affixed to the top of the windshield.)

After the completion of his European Holiday, Mr. Gleseke returned his new Daytona to the Ferrari Factory for follow on shipping to New York. In addition to the delivery of his new Ferrari, a large assortment of spare parts were invoiced separately and shipped with the Ferrari by ocean to Chinetti Garthwaite Motors which was the new official distributor for Ferrari in the States at that time.

One year later and now showing 5,700 original miles, Mr. Gleseke offered his Ferrari for sale. It remained unsold and he offered it for sale again one year later in 1974. Gleseke who was still residing in Fort Lauderdale Florida had the car delivered to his local authorized Ferrari agent, Cressman/Baumgarten Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale. The car was there for services and new head gaskets as well as being offered for public sale. Shortly thereafter in June of 1974, Cressman/Baumgarten Ferrari formalized a sale of this Daytona to John and Elizabeth Kelly of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Repairs to the head gaskets led to a full overhaul of the cylinder heads including a complete valve job. Due to the delays in the repairs it was not until February 24th, 1976 that new Florida registration and license plates were issued to the Kelly’s.

The Kelly’s greatly enjoyed their new Ferrari quietly over the next several years until they too decided to take it on a European Holiday coinciding with another visit to Le Mans. In 1981, the car was shipped to Europe and issued new “EE” plates “EE-6-3322” using the address:

As evidence to their European Holiday, the original “EE” registration documents as well as a “Le Mans” sticker affixed to the front windshield remain with this superbly original Daytona today. The Kelly’s continued to enjoy their Ferrari Daytona over the next few decades until they had reached an incredible 40 years of uninterrupted ownership. Upon reaching that milestone, they reluctantly agreed last year to the sale of their treasured Daytona to a well known Ferrari dealer and collector with a keen eye for originality and authenticity. Having owned more than 100 different Daytonas since buying them new in the 1970s, he was well qualified stating confidently that this was the finest original, low mile, carefully preserved and conserved example he had ever encountered. With just two owners and only 22,000 documented miles from new, it would be very difficult to find a better example anywhere.

This Ferrari is sold with all tools, manuals, pouch, books, full jack kit and copies of all of the original sales and invoice records going back to new. All services are completely current and up to date. This is a completely rust and accident free vehicle with all matching numbers, front to back and top to bottom
